We are considering a car in our South Africa plans

For our vacation in South Africa we are planning on spending somewhere between two and four weeks depending upon how far our dollar will go at the time of our travel.  One of our concerns is the subject of Car Hire.  Are we better off hiring a car for our entire stay and having a separate pick up and drop off point or would it be to our advantage to travel across the country on public transportation and only hire a car when we want to do local touring excursions?  We understand you can only advise on current conditions but would like to know for planning purposes.
