Vitamin C May Help Reduce Risk Of Heart Disease
January 2nd, 2008 by admin
I found this really interesting article on Nutraingredients.com, and it was interesting on two counts. The first was that scientists are now looking at chronic inflammation as a better indication of the likelihood of developing heart disease than cholesterol levels. I think this makes more sense, given what I’ve read on inflammation and its role in many other chronic diseases. This should have huge implications for the industries built around cholesterol lowering, not least the drug industry.
The other was that the humble vitamin C helps reduce the levels of C-reactive protein, which is a marker of inflammation that is believed to be a good predictor of heart disease. 500mg of vitamin C a day reduced this protein by 24% after 2 months.
