I need lower monthly payments

I really need lower monthly payments, so I want to consolidate my student debts. How do I go about this? Do I call my lender, or should I contact one of those companies that are always sending me letters about consolidating my student loans? Does anyone know where I can find out more about how to consolidate student debts? I need to get lower monthly payments, even if these means I will have to make the loan term longer and pay more in interest. Once I get back on my feet I’ll be able to pay off extra and hopefully won’t end up paying the loan for that long.
